Wild yeasts, spontaneous fermentations, rotten apples, expressions of the common sense. What is rottenness, again?
The matter boils over, non inert, by means of what the eye can't physically see, the inert mind don't consider. Water, flour, and time: the mathematic equation purified of biology and chemistry. The water is enemy of the flour. Always kept apart from each other to avoid the proliferation of undesirable life. To eventually join them in controlled microbial orgies, inspired by chance events.
As by chance was the life on this planet: from a first cell which processed the inert matter, chemicals only livable for itself. It arranged the possibility for other, more complex live forms that eventually generated a demiurge in their own image and likeness. And after its creation they started to look for it, to proof their imagination or the lack of it. Something who resembles us in the form, not in the substance. Or something that rises us to what we had created for ourselves. If we could imagine who created the life for us the power of our imagination seemed enough to create the life itself, climbing up again its principles. We escaped our gravitational perception, the one that defines our form to find other forms of life or life in other forms, exploring again those principles.
Kneading inert matter and life we could one day shape a new planet, all by ourselves. We would then be demiurges, the creators of a new life before having understood the one we have. Creators of a new planet before having understood how to take care of one. Generators of a new life before having understood how to keep it.

The Horizontal Vertex

by Lorenzo Barbasetti di Prun.

The History after the tempest

A disaster, the unexpected fury of the unleashed Nature can drastically change the perception of the landscape. The macro and the micro. Forever, we would say, but we are a species with a short survival expectancy, an even shorter individual lifespan. Our memory eventually is as mutable as our mood. The wind blew stronger than anyone could remember, the forests yielded. Trees went flat. Expanding their domain in a matter of seconds. They forced the perspective, from vertical to horizontal. Our perception needs to change as well. What we got used to seeing standing is now laying on our street, lakes and houses. What we have been long neglected is now showing itself in another dimension. A brand new world. What is our responsibility? We should rather ask ourselves what is our awareness. Was that world already there before it started falling on our heads? We might find it out reading its skin and innards like scavengers on an unknown carcass.

Like victims of a shipwreck, we explore the new environment searching for what is edible. We redefine the customs of the world from where we have just been cut off. We reconsider old stories, explore back the myths of ancient cultures we thought we could have buried.
Forever.

Considerations at the origin of the horizontal vertex have led Massimo Tevarotto in his first exploration of Vaia’s fault and inspired his work Superficium.

_raw material:

Superficium

by Massimo Tevarotto.

Le chiome e i fusti spezzati portano all'orizzonte dello sguardo materiale prima verticale.

Superficium has been partially inspired by a previous reflection: The Horizontal Vertex by Lorenzo Barbasetti di Prun.

It has itself generated a consistent idea about jewellery which is preserved in the _archive as _raw material in order to promote further _explorations.

Sei scemo o mangi sassi

[either you are dumb or you eat stones]

by Lorenzo Barbasetti di Prun

It is a rhetorical trap.

As it is usually expressed in the Italian language using the interrogative form, it suggests the impossibility of a dialectics. The two terms are tangled in an inextricable identity. The dumb is nailed down to his being inept, unable to adhere to the context, victims of the malicious use of the language.
Either he admit he is stupid or he is forced to chose an option that makes him look like a fool.
[people laugh at him]

Here, by simply removing the question mark at the end of the sentence, the dialectic is finally opened. The sense is flipped at the point that the dumb is the one who do not eat stones. He is not able to dissect the reality he moves in. He is the one missing the tools, the teeth smashing, preluding to the processing of the enzymes.

In a landscape perceived as made of rocks alone, where the enchanted perception chains inhabitants to bare slopes, Prometheus releases Tantalus from his torment. Eating stones is a cultural approach and practice which is all but figurative. It means gaining back the tools to be actors of the landscape, to understand its resources. To crumble stereotypes.

The rock soup

Inspired by a leggendary recipe of misery from Livorno (and others around Europe), the edible digression translates some unsospected protagonists of the landscape into food.

Reactivated by Vaia tempest, shuffling the notes of the frail edible dictionary, stones, barks, roots, moss and lichens, fruits and herbs repopulate a languge with their minimal elements of significance. They enter a potential linguistic heritage.
