It is a rhetorical trap.
As it is usually expressed in the Italian language using the interrogative form, it suggests the impossibility of a dialectics. The two terms are tangled in an inextricable identity. The dumb is nailed down to his being inept, unable to adhere to the context, victims of the malicious use of the language.
Either he admit he is stupid or he is forced to chose an option that makes him look like a fool.

Here, by simply removing the question mark at the end of the sentence, the dialectic is finally opened. The sense is flipped at the point that the dumb is the one who do not eat stones. He is not able to dissect the reality he moves in. He is the one missing the tools, the teeth smashing, preluding to the processing of the enzymes.
In a landscape perceived as made of rocks alone, where the enchanted perception chains inhabitants to bare slopes, Prometheus releases Tantalus from his torment. Eating stones is a cultural approach and practice which is all but figurative. It means gaining back the tools to be actors of the landscape, to understand its resources. To crumble stereotypes.
sei scemo o mangi sassi. e’ modo di dire, tranello retorico popolare. espresso in forma interrogativa suggerisce un’impossibile dialettica, in cui vige l’indistricabile identità tra i due principi. inchiodando lo scemo al suo stato di inetto, incapace di aderire al contesto, vittima delle trappole di un linguaggio malizioso.
qui invece è manchevole colui che i sassi non li mangi, che non sia in grado di dissezionare il paesaggio che lo circonda anche per mezzo delle arcate dentali. l’azione meccanica che prelude a quella enzimatica che processa. la scelta di introiettare o meno definisce strutture e gerarchie di senso.
colui che mangia i sassi è quindi colui che dispone degli strumenti per leggere ed interpretare un paesaggio che radichi tra le pietre.

Inspired by a leggendary recipe of misery from Livorno (and others around Europe), the edible digression translates some unsospected protagonists of the landscape into food.
Reactivated by Vaia tempest, shuffling the notes of the frail edible dictionary, stones, barks, roots, moss and lichens, fruits and herbs repopulate a languge with their minimal elements of significance. They enter a potential linguistic heritage.

ispirata ad un leggendario piatto livornese della miseria, la divagazione edibile proposta traduce alcuni insospettabili protagonisti del paesaggio in pietanza.
riattivati da tempesta vaia che ha scompaginato gli appunti di un esile dizionario edibile, sassi, cortecce, apparati radicali, muschi e licheni, frutti ed erbe ripopolano un linguaggio di elementi minimi di senso. entrano a far parte di un potenziale patrimonio linguistico.
